My website (http://sherwoods-forests.com) doesn't sell anything in the sense that people can buy stuff.
I see it as having the following functions:
1. People who search for "tree farm" edmonton alberta can find me. Since I'm way out of town, and a one person operation I don't have a big ad budget. Getting my name and the web site on various places helps keep it in the top 20 returns for that search.
2. A tree farmer sells the future. While I've got a few of most trees I sell planted locally, they haven't had time to get big. So I have to use pictures to show what they will be like in a couple decades. This is especially true for trees that are uncommon in our area.
3. It's a place to educate people. The more that people read about the trees they are considering, the less time I need to spend talking to them about alternatives.
4. It's a place to soapbox my ethics and attitude. A large number of my customers make the drive out here because of a trust relationship that started when they read my words on the web.
5. It's a place to link to from other free advertising sites. E.g. this year I've been running several ads on Kijiji I run a link from that ad to my main web site. (A surprising number of people do not check that out however.) The Kijiji ads work well. Craigslist not nearly as well. None of the others have worked at all as far as I can find out.
