Just wondering what everyone sold or did for profit this time of year. I know many people shut down but I would like to know if someone has any creative ideas?
Though I am very far South with many mild Winters I found out years ago that January and February were not viable for me to be open to the public. My impression is that many folks are mentally "shopped out" from Christmas and their cash reserves very low to non existant so sales for me were slim to none. I root/seed and transplant 45-50 thousand cuttings and seedlings by myself ,with no employees, that I start here in October and November so even if sales were moderate I would not have much time to deal with customers after Christmas. I've never found a crop in my sitation that excites folks in Jan-Feb so for me it's time to get the greenhouses sparkling clean and exploding in color by March 1st. when our Spring sales generally skyrocket. On the other hand July, August and September are beastly hot here in S.E Texas and there has never been a magic plant that screams out the door when it's near or above 100F every day. I take advantage of these slow times for greenhouse and personal repair!

Our garden centers in northeast Ohio are open through the winter. We do not sell much this time of year, but we spend this time doing inventory right after Christmas, receiving merchandise and setting the stores for spring.
Our main slaes are in bird feeders and seed, tropical houseplants and pottery, houseplant care products, home decor and garden seeds. Folks here like to get a start on their seed planting as early as December! If we have a big snowstorm, we will move some ice melter and snow shovels.
I propagate zonal geraniums from my own stock plants. I do 2" rooted cuttings and 4.5" pre finished. I sell to small retail growers in southern NJ and eastern PA. It gives me some cash sales in January and Feb. which are my two favorite months of the year...
