Greenhouse Grower is preparing coverage for its State Of The Industry Report in January 2010. As part of the report, we're asking industry people questions about the state of the commercial greenhouse floriculture industry.

My question for you is: How would you describe the state of the greenhouse floriculture industry today?

Annuals are selling very well, and most of our crops are booked very young. Perennials and herbs are moving too. They are carrying us through the rough time since our trees and shrub sales have fallen greatly.

Thanks for the feedback, Alan. I sent out a survey to Greenhouse Grower's readership a couple weeks ago, and I asked growers which crops they're most optimistic about. Majority (28 percent) are most optimistic about herbs and vegetables and many others (23 percent), like you, are very optimistic about annuals.

Most growers are not very optimistic about trees or woody ornamentals. I asked growers which crop they're least optimistic about for 2010. This is what growers said:

Container perennials 11.6%
Flowering potted plants 12.0%
Fresh cut flowers 13.2%
Herbs and vegetables 2.1%
Ornamental bedding plants 5.8%
Plugs and propagation 1.7%
Potted foliage 11.2%
Trees 21.1%
Woody ornamentals 15.3%
Other 6.2%
