My mother-in-law received this perennial when a friend was dividing, but she doesn't know what it is. She says it's a pretty vigorous spreading groundcover. Is it a hosta?
It's Aegopodium podagrarium 'variegata', and it will take over your mother's yard!!! Highly invasive, difficult to control. Attractive, shallow rooted, but a true THUG. Dig it out NOW, if you like those rocks to be seen
Hi Sara,
Aegopodium..very prolific, somewhat invasive....but will tolerate shade..so alone..it is effective, creeps among rocks, and brings light to dismal areas..she will have it forever!

It is called Snow on the Mountain. The latin name is Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegata'. It can be a very aggressive groundcover. So much so, that it is not uncommon to spread into lawn areas.
We have it in our Aerulean Plant Search database by many common names - bishop's weed, gout weed, ground elder, herb gerard, ash weed, and ground ash in addition to snow on the mountain. It is hardy in zones 4-9, deciduous, drought tolerant, and as Danielle said, tolerates shade.
Variegata is considered weedy compared to A. podagraria which is invasive.
