No eye contact is terribly impersonal. Even if just for a second, eye contact makes you human, instead of a machine. And as well as the phone, the receiver can usually read a smile on your face.
Same goes for who ever answers the telephone at your business and what attitude/disposition they project. Remember that the opinion of new callers to your business can be soured by someone with a poor attitude or poor communication skills.
