I was really hot yesterday about
Home Depot's genius decision to start stocking trees and small shrubs. I could barely communicate to you the blatant fact that the quality of their trees was almost laughable....in the sense of "I just can't believe it"....laughable.

I had to scrape my jaw off the pavement when I saw Home Depot's spring stock lined up along their store front today.
HELLO! It's still March! If you're from Iowa or have at least lived here a year or two,…

We got a call late last night from USDA during a survey about what we grow. No problems with that, but when they asked how many we sold of mums, hosta and another perennials. I said I didn't know. Then she said that will be a no response to the survey. What do you think about this? Any concerns if they are asking too much?

I guess that calling some customers unproductive sounds harsh, but what I am really talking about is the customer who comes into the store and asks, say, how to put in a lawn. You spend the time telling them what to do, and you usually get, "OK, I'll come back with my spouse on Tuesday and we'll get what we need." My business is small enough that I know that they never came back. They probably used the information to go to the box store and buy what they need for less money. I have been in lawn…

Each holiday season, shoppers find themselves confronted with a choice: celebrate with a fresh, real tree, or
one that is artificial plastic or aluminum. What most people don't realize is that the best choice has always
been the traditional and natural choice - a Real Christmas Tree.
Consider this:
• While they're growing, Real Christmas Trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other
gases and emitting fresh oxygen.
• Real Christmas Trees are grown on farms just like any crop.
Harve…

We are changing our heating to the greenhouse with hotwater using an outdoor wood furnace. So with that we are changing my growing area. We want to use poly to make a curtain but with the hoops we have the brackets will not let the poly hang down. So how do we do it? I know all of you have done this, but just can't figure it out. Pictures would be good but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Becky from Becky's Greenhouse Iowa

After several years, I have finally taken the time to update my website for the CSU Greenhouse and Floriculture Extension program. I have included some new features including links to social media that I use to keep you all posted.
Check it out and give me any suggestions that you may find helpful.

Green Team Leaders (teachers, volunteers and administrators) are initiating projects for our students and we need help. Our theme is general but our hopes are to have classroom projects dealing with fresh air provided for by plants and trees. Any suggestions on resources that we could request help from? Thanks for any help you can give.~diane

I travel all around North America visiting growers and everywhere I go I ask the growers if they maintain their Dosatron fertilizer injectors. Most of the time the answer is no! Some of the injectors have never been touched in over 10 years!
In the past 20 years I have given talks, written articles, done trade shows and cannot get growers to understand how important this maintenance is.
This is so important to crop quality, how can I get growers to see the importance of this?
I welcome your feed…

I think the survey done on this site for Spring 2009 and the changes and impacts made is a very good one. The only thing I feel that may have over looked as a potential impact on both retail (and subsequently wholesale) sales in 2009 has been the decrease in gasoline prices. Gas prices on average across the US were down significantly (38% or $1.50 per gallon comparing Memorial Day each year. Source is Energy Information Administration website, http://eia.doe.gov/ ) and have a major affect on the…

How many commercial and garden center operations honestly keep a close eye on their energy usage through their environmental control systems? Or is that system an undisclosed amount of rusty, old t-stats and a few complaints to the staff when you see the unit heaters running with the exhaust fans? I've read the average cost to heat one square foot of greenhouse space is $1.25. That adds up to a new control device investment pretty quick....

looking for that plant person who can help me sell those plants, buy, organize and have fun. Martha's Vineyard is a good place for a garden center, but there is plenty of competition. I'd love a plant person for a few months, then they can enjoy the summer and have time off in the best part of the season. Don't we know someone like that? Call me at 508-693-0910 spread the word
thanks, Dee

Heres the link to the
Selkirk Lake website that I made. I have a lot of hours working on this site but it has a lot of content. I used
Coffee Cup HTML 2008 to design it. I've made a couple of other sites with just two to 4 pages which was easy.

The amount of buzz being generated by social networking has finally drawn attention to the need for landscape professionals to get online. Because of my work with Landscapedia.info, I spend a fair amount of time talking with retailers and designers about how to get online. I spend almost as much time convincing some that hiring a webdesigner and adding a website to their business cards is just the first step in leveraging the web to drive business.
So many landscape professionals expect to laun…
